Course Books and How to Buy them
How to Get the Books
I have assigned five titles for this class. A two volume set of documents, Africa and the West, available in a cheap paperback edition (2011 edition only) published by Oxford University Press. You need to buy these volumes (or use the copies on two-hour reserve at Powell Library) in order to succeed with the weekly quizzes. Likewise with Boahen’s set of essays, African Perspectives on Colonialism, only available in paperback. Buy or order them as soon as possible. Three required books are available in either paperback or electronic versions (the latter version immediately available any time): Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Dreams in a Time of War, Chinua Achebe, Anthills of the Savannah, and Trevor Noah, Born a Crime. You will read these three books in the second half of the quarter. I strongly recommend that you listen to Trevor Noah’s autobiography as an audio book which you can get from Amazon for free (so long as you remember to cancel your subscription to their audible books service – which you will need to sign up for unless you buy either an audio book or a hard copy -- before your 30 days free trial expires).
