Winter is the season of slip and falls. They are usually caused by ice, snow, or pavements covered with a frosty layer. Unfortunately, for our health and safety, the result of slip and falls amount to various injuries. They include sprains, bruises or fractures of the limbs. These types of abrasions are accompanied by pain, swelling and difficulty in moving. So, what do you do in the event of an injury, how to avoid it, and how can you slip and fall safely?

After Injury

First, you need to remove any shoes, jewelry or watches from your damaged limb, because the swelling will make it impossible to remove later. In order to counteract the swelling, you should raise the sore spot, like put your arm in a sling, or support your aching foot on a chair. Ice packs relieve pain because the cold has a vasoconstrictive effect and thus prevents swelling (however, do not put ice directly on the skin as it may cause frostbite). When putting on an elastic bandage, you should not bandage too tightly and "tightly", due to the possibility of ischemia.

It is important to remember that the following is first aid care to be done immediately after your accident. However, whenever you can, call an ambulance right away for further treatment. If you suspect that your fall was caused by the negligence of another party, it’s equally important to contact a slip and fall attorney.

If you suspect a bone fracture, remember to immobilize the two adjacent joints. This is preferably done with a suitable splint, but in the absence of a splint, a stick or boards may be used for this purpose. The limb may also be immobilized with a bandage.

If the swelling increases and the pain persists, go visit a doctor and inquire about a radiograph. It must be remembered that even a minor trauma can cause a fracture. Do not underestimate your injuries. Improper treatment of fractures may lead to pathological adhesions. Proper treatment of injuries is provided only by a doctor!

How to Avoid Slipping

  • Wear appropriate footwear that increases friction.
  • Put on clothes that do not restrict freedom of movement.
  • Adjust your pace of walking to the weather conditions.
  • Do not run on icy and slippery surfaces.
  • Hold on to the handrail when climbing stairs.
  • Limit going outside
  • Choose routes from which snow has been removed or which have been sprinkled with sand.
  • Pay special attention to signs warning against falling or slipping in dangerous places.
  • Cover metal and wooden surfaces with a special layer of rough, non-slip material.

How to Fall Safely

You can try to neutralize the effects of slipping. Knowing how to fall safely will help. When falling, turn your head, hide your chin, and extend your arm to protect the body. It is better to fall on your arm than risk damaging your head. Try to turn and avoid falling on your back, but rather your buttocks. Remember to also protect your wrists, elbows, and knees.
